Roadway Calamity or Lifelong Mobility: You Decide

By Doreen E. Fiorillo

We have all seen them. Cars that appear to be driving themselves down the road. Once we get a closer look, we are likely to find a small, elderly man or woman gripping the steering wheel with both hands, squinting eyes solidly focused on only the road ahead, usually with their mouths agape. Yes, it is frightening, knowing that any moment they may be the victim of an accident or cause someone else to be injured or killed.

It happens everyday. Older people, with poor eyesight and failing reflexes get behind the wheel, driving on our roadways and interstates. Many of us see them as roadway menaces, driving long after they should be. Some of us feel that their driving privileges should be revoked or at very least, they should be retested each year to determine their ability to drive safely on the roads.

Deciding how to balance road safety and an individual right to lifelong mobility is a hot topic of debate. Before you take a position on the issue, take into account that one day you will be an older American that, in all likelihood, will resist anyone who attempts to thwart your desire to remain independent and mobile...contact Doreen for more information regarding the remainder of this article.

I Never Win The War

By Doreen E. Fiorillo

It has been over 40 years now since I have been engaged in battles of the bulge. I have had the good fortune to have top notch Commanders such as: Atkins, Scarsdale, Simmons and so many others directing my every morsel. Commander Richard Simmons was tough! Mostly because his training in bootie camp wore me out. Nonetheless, marching to the beat of his oldies worked. That time, I won the battle.

It has been close to 10 years since I have trained with Commander Simmons. Since then, I have gained more weight then I care to be honest about. I was thinking that he would be disappointed with me since I have replaced every pound, plus some extra, since we had fought that battle together. It occurred to me that, perhaps we should become reacquainted and I should re-enlist in his army of fat-fighters.

Then, guess what happened? ...contact Doreen for more information regarding the remainder of this article.

Early Discipline

By Doreen E. Fiorillo, M.A.

If you are a parent, it may be difficult to imagine that your precious little one year old could possibly develop poor behavior. He or she is just so cute, makes you laugh and can be quite charming too. But guess what? Your child is already beginning to learn the fundamentals of behavior.

If she is crawling or walking, she will explore what was not within her reach a short time ago. She wants to touch it, taste it, hear it and smell it. It is an entire new world that she knows nothing about and it is up to you to keep her safe. In doing so, you begin to teach her the basics of limits and boundaries.

Limits and Boundaries are essential to teaching your child appropriate behavior. If you do not understand and respect them yourself, it will be difficult to teach them to your child. Limits and boundaries are essentially the parameters in which we function as human beings. If we do not know what they are, we drift, have no direction and become out of control. The limits and boundaries are externally set until we have internally assimilated them........contact Doreen for more information regarding the remainder of this article.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts

By Doreen E. Fiorillo

"Someone, I say, will remember us in the future"

Sappho, 640 B.C.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts has created a place where the talent and expression of women of the past, present and future is revered. The creation of this, one of a kind, museum was a gradual process of art collection that began in the nineteen sixties by Wilhelmina Cole Holladay and her husband, Wallace.

The collection was initiated in response to the under representation of women in the arts and continued until the nineteen eighties when the collection grew to proportions requiring museum placement. Ms. Holladay worked towards the creation of a museum dedicated to women art, which was formally established in November of 1981.

NMWA operated from temporary offices for the first 5 years until a permanent home could be found. In 1987, NMWA re-opened in a landmark building near the White House in Washington, DC. The gala opening included an inaugural exhibition; American Women Artists, 1830-1930 and concert performed by two women pianists and the National Symphony Orchestra...contact Doreen, regarding more information on the remainder of this article.

Profile of an Adult Female Survivor of Childhood Incest

By Doreen E. Fiorillo

People have said to me: Why are you dragging this up now? Why? Why? Because it has controlled every facet of my life. It has damaged me in every possible way. It has destroyed everything in my life that has been of value.- Jennierose Lavender.

The impact of incest on adult female survivors can be shattering and pervasive. As a result of a culture that has left females demeaned and suffocated by the tyranny of patriarchy, incest remains a personal injury with life long effects. In every area of their lives, survivors of incest struggle to gain self-esteem and to find a sense of worthiness.

They must combat the residual effects of incest on a daily basis, along with the ordinary struggles of being a woman in a society where men still have control.. The psychological and emotional trauma that a victim of incest experiences is equivalent to the severity and duration of the abuse, and the nature of the relationship she had with the offender. Those that survive, experience a myriad of symptoms and characteristics that contributes to the general profile of an adult female incest survivor...contact Doreen for more information about the remainder of this article.

By Doreen E. Fiorillo

To all men who think that they are experiencing menopause: you are not going crazy.
